The closer they got to the ship, the quicker the two royals’ steps. Virid was almost bouncing by the time they were looking up at the towering, sailing city, and Roni was biting her lip to contain herself. Kye could hardly blame them, she supposed.

She’d had experience sneaking, sometimes breaking, into old Knoxiran buildings. It was dangerous, probably foolish, but it was always an incredible sight.

The architecture of the Dark Kingdom was distinct for its sharp angles. They build on hexagons, octagons, and especially triangles. Buildings aboard the Knoxa did extend like rock formations into the sky, but with none of nature’s organic design. And they were not made of stone.

Everything on the ship looked to be made of dark metal, and Kye didn’t doubt that most of it was without welds or bolts. That each structure had been practically forged in place.

The closer they got, the more the city came alive.

Not with people, but with traces of life.

Banners strewn between buildings, lighted symbols on signs, doors, and walls. Linens hanging out of pentagonal windows. Street lamps that were still lit.

Kiel and Roni came to a quick stop several yards still from the Knoxa, and Kye couldn’t see why, until her brother waved up at the deck.

Standing at the edge with no railing were two fair-haired women.

“Friends of yours?” Virid asked from behind him.

“Sorta.” Kiel grinned.

If Kye expected more smooth machinery, with its symmetrical and predictable movements, she would have been disappointed.

Beams, planks of metal, lifted themselves from the side of the Knoxa. As easy as if they were wooden and the air was dense salt water. They floated into the formation of a ramp.

Soft sounds and words of awe were coming from Roni and Virid; Kiel threw a smirk Kye’s way. Kye hid her chagrin under her hood.

Her eyes went right up the ramp to the two women already starting. They were the absolute embodiment of Knoxirans, though one was paler than Kye and the other a medium tone somewhere between Virid and Roni. The hair was as light as it could be and still be considered a color, and their eyes a perfect, bright grey. Actually, the one on the left had no pigment to her locks at all. Just like the Knoxiran pretending to be an alchemist in the enemy Red Kingdom.

Kye’s throat constricted under the chain of her necklace.

Maybe the woman was old as the Wizard Grimmal had been, but her face showed no signs of advanced age. Her hair was short, just below the line of her ears, and her dark clothes were the shade black became when it was old and faded.

Her partner was taller, had much longer hair, and a rounded face like Roni’s. And, she was much more obvious about her magical ability, as many Knoxirans were. Her hair, her one sleeve, the belt she wore, and the corset-like armor over her grey-green tunic were covered, tied, and braided with chains. Black and silver metals of every thickness.

An intense discomfort settled in Kye’s chest and neck as the full-blooded Knoxiran women moved down the ramp.
